Leaking Showers
Do you have a tile shower that leaks? Whilst the cause may often be a leaking shower pan a complete diagnosis should be made to look for other causes such as a leaking plumbing supply pipe, poorly installed, caulked or grouted tiles and faucet stems. The shower pan is either a sheet of lead or plastic formed into a pan that is under the tile floor of the shower. The grout between tiles will allow some water to seep through and the pan develops a leak, water will seep through to the surface below.
Natural stone and ceramic tiles have different rates of expansion from the structure to which they are being applied and can cause an improperly installed shower pan to leak. Waterproofing should form a barrier against the bonding of the tile bed to the structure it also helps in overcoming the tendency to crack. Here are some most common shower leaking causes:
- Separation between the wall and floor tiles causes the concrete under the floor tiles to become saturated with water, rotting older pans and forcing water to leak out.
- Grout missing around the drain.
- A poorly constructed pan that has no pre-slope to the drain before it is put in place. Usually the weep holes to the drain are clogged.
- Loose floor tiles inside the shower.
- Inside the upper portion of the drainpipe, excessive clogging in the drain can cause water to backup into certain parts of the drain. Water flows through where the drain sandwiches the pan and gives the appearance as if the pipe were leaking.
- The pan disintegrates where the drain sandwiches the pan due to excessive water build-up in the concrete under the tile floor. It's also possible on newer showers that the pan is not properly adhered where the drain sandwiches the pan.
- If the shower walls are constructed out of sheetrock or concrete backer board, and the floor is built with traditional wire lath and cement, a set-up like this usually cannot handle the stress of movement. Joints will crack and water will saturate the structure under the tile floor.
- Normal building movement, even the vibration of opening and closing doors can cause cracking problems.
- Poor installation of the shower pan. Installers who lack the proper experience install the waterproof membrane with nails or fail to properly prepare the sub-floor.
Leaking Shower Doors
The most common shower door style is the bypass door that has two doors that slide in a frame mounted to the tub's end walls. If your shower door or glass panel is leaking, it may just need to be re-caulked. If a shower door will not close properly, the door may not be plumb or the hinges may be loose. Installing a new shower door requires attention to placing and attaching the tracks correctly and proper handling of the glass doors. A Toronto based Servisol plumbing service professional can handle the job properly and efficiently.

Replacing Shower Fixtures and Repairing Leaking Pipes
At first you may think that all shower fixtures have basically the same measurements and it is more or less an easy fit when you take out the old and put in the new. But if you embark on this task without first equipping yourself with the tips and tricks of installing and selecting shower fixtures you will quickly find that you will be stuck with a disabled shower.
With shower fixtures, the biggest installation challenge will be removing the fixture from behind the wall. Rarely one finds an access panel on the wall behind the shower fixture. In the absence of an access panel we are equipped to carefully cut the wallboard and tile from the front to remove the old faucet from the water lines.
Some older houses still have lead wastes and galvanized pipes. These should be replaced with copper piping. If the water feed pipes are copper then the fittings to the faucet will probably detach easily. However, sometimes the copper fittings are old and when you go to unscrew them, the copper piping itself twists. Also, don't be surprised if some of the copper piping has pinhole leaks in it from corrosion. Where copper pipes are attached to the old galvanized or lead piping the proper dialectic union and transition fittings should be used to counteract the tendency for the joint to develop a leak from electrolysis. Most building codes will not allow soldering copper to lead because there is an electrolytic reaction that occurs causing the pipe to fail.
The two most important tip and trick you can follow when selecting and installing a shower fixture is to select Servisol, reliable Toronto plumbing services.
Just because a shower looks waterproof doesn’t mean it is.
Even with sealed grout joints, water and vapour can penetrate between the tiles in shower walls and floors and cause serious damage. Moisture that collects in the wall cavity or floor structure of a shower is the primary cause of mould growth. But a properly installed tile shower can be hygienic and maintenance-free while providing a luxurious look that can’t be matched by other materials.
The Schluter-Shower System for ceramic tile showers eliminates the possibility of damaging leaks and mold growth due to moisture penetration. This membrane/ drain system is used to create a waterproof shower before the tiles are installed. A major breakthrough for installers, the system is not only waterproof, but vapor tight as well, so ceramic tile showers can be constructed using standard drywall. Servisol’s on staff technicians are trained and experienced in Schluter shower system installations in showers from a basic design to the most complex layout.
